To set preferences that determine the basic setup of IBM(R) Lotus(R) iNotesTM click Preferences. The Basics preferences display automatically when you open preferences.

Mail file ownership
|
If you are not an existing Lotus Notes(R) user and you are setting up your own mail account, make sure that your name is in the field This mail file belongs to in the IBM Lotus Notes(R) hierarchical format (for example John Smith/Acme).

Display
|
Choose which tab displays when you log in to Lotus iNotes.
Choose how to display list views. Viewing document lists one page at a time may improve performance, if you are using a lower end computer.
Enable scroll hints to display information about messages as you scroll through mail list views, based on how you have the view sorted.

Search
|
You must enable full-text indexing or Search will not work.
|
Personal categories
|
Create your own categories to organize your to do, contact, and calendar entries. Categories allow you to tag messages, and are an alternative to organizing by storing entries in folders.

Lotus iNotes Control
|
Install this control to facilitate creating and downloading attachments, for example by providing status bars or allowing you to select multiple files (depends on the browser).

Default Display Name
|
Available only if your administrator enabled this feature.
You can display primary names or alternate names. A primary name is internationally recognizable; an alternate name is recognizable in your own native language.
To display an alternate name, select Display alternate names, and then follow the steps in Displaying Alternate Names to complete the setup.

Default Mail Client
|
Click Make Default to make Lotus iNotes your default mail client. (Microsoft(R) Internet Explorer only)

Instant Messaging
|
Available only if your administrator enabled this feature.
You must enable this preference to use instant messaging within Lotus iNotes.

Spell Check Default Dictionary
|
Select a dictionary from the list to change the default dictionary, which is the default language for your mail server.

Right Double-Click Close
|
Enable this feature to close a window or document. Optionally, change the speed to adjust to your mouse click speed.
|
The owner of a mail file is the only person allowed to run the out-of-office agent, delegate access to mail or calendar features for the mail file, or set preferences for the mail file.
When creating a full-text index, there may be a delay between the time you select a full-text index for searching and when the server creates the full-text index. This is normal.
